Folk on the Pier 2025
April 9, 2025Stephen Cox’s monumental sculptures, imbued with mythic resonance, will transform Houghton Hall this summer.
Houghton Hall’s parklands and historic interiors will become a stage for Stephen Cox’s “Myth,” a sweeping exhibition from May 4th to September 28th.
This unprecedented collection, the culmination of 40 years of the acclaimed British sculptor’s global explorations, will feature works inspired by India, Egypt, Italy, and beyond.
Around 20 monumental sculptures, carved from marble and stone, will punctuate the landscape, while smaller, more intimate pieces will resonate within the 18th-century State Rooms. The South wing gallery will offer insight into Cox’s creative process through works on paper, alongside the arresting “Shrine” sculpture, a highlight of the National Gallery’s “Encounters.” Stephen Cox, a Royal Academician, is renowned for his mastery of stone and his pioneering work with materials like Imperial Porphyry, leaving an indelible mark on the world of contemporary sculpture.
