If you’re looking for a proper Norfolk day out that’s big on thrills but short on stuffiness, the Norfolk National at Fakenham Racecourse is exactly where you want to be.

Since it’s happening on Monday, 4th May—the first May Bank Holiday—it’s the ultimate excuse to round up the family, forget about work, and head for the countryside. This isn’t just a race meeting; it’s a full-blown celebration of the Norfolk way of life.

The Big One: The Norfolk National

The highlight of the day is the Norfolk National, a 3.5-mile test of stamina that’s as tough as it is exciting. Fakenham is a quirky, tight little track, which means you’re never far from the action. You’ll hear the thud of the hooves and the “clack” of the birch fences as the field thunders past.

A Showcase of All Things Norfolk

We’ve packed the day with local flavor so you can experience the best of our county between races:

  • The Artisan Food Village: Forget standard stadium snacks. We’re hosting a lineup of Norfolk’s finest artisan producers. Expect everything from Brancaster mussels and local pork pies to handmade cheeses and wood-fired pizzas.

  • The “Local Legends” Brewery Pop-up: Grab a pint of real ale or craft cider from our neighbors at Barsham Brewery or Woodforde’s. It’s the perfect way to toast a winner.

  • The Norfolk Mascot Race: For a bit of bank holiday madness, don’t miss our local mascots—from farm favorites to local business heroes—racing (and stumbling) down the final straight. It’s pure, hilarious chaos.

  • Country Life & Animals: This is a rural track at heart. Expect to see local displays that celebrate our agricultural roots, making it feel more like a country fair than a formal sporting event.

Bring the Whole Crew (Dogs Included!)

We really mean it when we say everyone is welcome:

  • Kids go free: Under-18s get in for free, and there’s plenty of space for them to run around.

  • Bring the dog: As long as they’re on a short lead, your four-legged friends are part of the family here.

  • Come as you are: No top hats required! Whether you’re in your favorite tweed or just comfortable jeans and wellies, you’ll fit right in.
